Why Everyone is Wrong About Protein World's 'Beach Body' Ad

Health and fitness company Protein World ignited a fire when they released a series of bold golden print ads throughout London on April 15.

The 74 billboards include a male and female version, but only one of the swimsuit models has inspired a backfire that reverberated across the internet like a barbell hitting the floor. Can you guess which one?

With debates from supporters and opponents overflowing on the web, both parties fail to engage in the only discussion worth having: Everyone is wrong.

How Unfriended is Changing Product Placement

All reviews aside, advertisers should be jumping for joy at the newest horror flick to hit the box office.

Unfriended, while at surface level may reek of low-budget millennial cliches, is the first silver screen production to attempt an immersive cyber setting. The film takes place in a Skype video chat between five friends and is supplemented by their interactions across different platforms as their video chat is hacked by an anonymous user.

What Unfriended lacked in plot development it made up for with a goldmine of advertising opportunities. The genuineness of main character Blaire Lily's digital multitasking allowed for inconspicuous product placement disguised as background noise. Aside from obvious homages to Skype, Spotify and iMessage, names like Tumblr, Teen Wolf and Forever 21 made B-list appearances within the tabs of Lily's browser.

Lies You've Been Told About the Advertising Industry

A quick search for "false advertising" on Google news uncovers a hotbed of legal controversy surrounding big brands -- more than 50 pages worth for articles published in 2014 alone. Companies like Nestle, Nordstrom and Red Bull have sat under the media spotlight for the misleading claims made in their marketing efforts.

Not only have advertising lawsuits damaged individual brands, but the prevalence of these controversies in mainstream media has left consumers with a sour aftertaste. This negative attitude about the advertising industry perpetuates a multitude of myths. The four most common follow.

The Most Important Word in Blogging (And in Life)

Last weekend I turned 21 years old, and since then something's changed.
My entire 20th year, I felt an incurable angst at being nested between the clueless teenage years and the duty-laden world of years 21 and beyond. I approached with awkwardness such fundamental issues as "Am I too old to wear ripped jeans?" and "Should I file my own taxes this year?" I got fired for the first time at 20, and I didn't take it very well. I moved out of my parents' house, moved to a new city, started school at a new university and started The LC Studio. I bade a bittersweet farewell to 20 for the memories I made with it.

Maybe that's why I've been absent from blogging for three weeks. And why I've acquired a new-found love of jazz music, bedtime yoga and business casual Pinterest fashion. I'm not ashamed to admit I've shifted perspectives in the months leading up to my big day and in the few weeks since.

Brilliant Branding: What is a Brand?

Like a yearbook embodies a period of life for a school, a brand embodies the life of a business. Each + every one upholds a look + feel as distinctive as a yearbook photo – even the ones you hated the most (my three years of braces perpetuated merciless picture days).

A “brand” isn't just synonymous for a company, product or service; a brand encompasses the identity of those things. It personifies them. It gives them a face. Branding allows us to differentiate between the goofy, carefree personality of Google and the sleek, sophisticated personality of Apple.

All brands accomplish the same goals:
  • Representing the values of the company
  • Influencing consumer perception of the company
  • Sustaining a relationship with consumers
In essence, branding controls how people feel about a company. All advertising, customer service, package design, hiring decisions + web design cater to branding.

4 Musts for Any Advertising Major

Mad Men personality Don Draper once said, "If you don't like what's being said, change the conversation." Therein lies the hallmark of the wonderful world of advertising: Influencing consumer conversation -- whether interpersonal or intrapersonal -- with the distinctive voice of a brand's campaigns.

Though in actuality the industry exists as much more "lax" than luxe, advertising fosters a creative, fun and fast-paced learning environment for those lucky enough to land positions within it.

I chose to study advertising because the shoe fit; my knowledge of journalism and graphic design combined with my passion for digital media and psychology led me to the advertising field like a beaming, neon arrow.

1. FIND YOUR NICHE

Advertising is characterized by four pillars: Account services, account planning, media planning and creative (which includes art and copywriting). Account services focus on client relationships, account and media planning research consumer behavior and the creative team crafts advertisement wording and design.

2. LEARN NEW MEDIA SKILLS

Advertising targets emerging platforms like social media as its new primary form of exposure. Adopting knowledge of SEO, coding, and even blogging will benefit you threefold when it comes time for that interview. This list of the most in-demand digital marketing skills explains how you can start developing those mentioned plus more right now.

3. PAY ATTENTION TO ADS

While most people can't escape them quick enough, it's your job to keep an eye out. Whether on TV, in magazines or online, paying attention to advertisements will clue you in on the do's and don'ts of great campaigns.

4. BE COMMITTED

Not trait persuades more than passion. You can't teach a person to love an industry, but you can teach them the skillsets associated with it. Embrace your interest in your advertising niche and use it to inspire others -- amateurs and experts.

How to Make the Very Best of a Communications Degree

Congratulations, young Padawan, on your interest in pursuing communications! I jump for joy at the expansion of the population of young professional communicators. We aren't like everyone else. It's okay; We can say that. It's our little secret. Bask in the egotism for a second, because the bad news is next.

Unlike other students, the plight of the communication major entails both classroom conscientiousness and real world experience. In the end, the worth of your communication degree equates to more than just the number of tests you aced or spirals you filled. Don't let those be all you can show for years of hard work. Follow these tips to ensure you make the very best of your time, money and degree.

My Biggest Blogging Pet Peeves

My experience in journalism, graphic design and communications mold me as probably pickier than most when it comes to upkeeping a blog. I take pride in the quality of my posts as well as their presentation, and I take special care to craft great social media marketing strategies due to my studies of advertising.

I retain a mental collection of post ideas, graphic inspiration and blogging role models that sometimes taints itself with small annoyances within the blogging world. My strongest blogging pet peeves range from carbon copy cover images to weak title wording. For the pure intent of bettering blogs and the gutsy guys and gals who produce them, I share these seven sins below:

Understanding Vectors and Bitmaps

It doesn't take a Picasso to recognize the power of great graphic design, but it may sometimes seem it takes an Einstein to learn how to create it. Design programs feel daunting, and most web how-to's leave you with more questions than answers. Skip the jumbled design jargon and read on for the blogger-friendly explanation of the 2D graphics king and queen.

7 Simple Ways to Spice Up Your Blog

Our blogs speak. They giggle and they groan; they squeal and they sigh. Too often, they say the wrong thing.

If your blog reflects your personality like a dirty mirror, it's time for an upgrade, and these seven simple tips require basic blogging knowledge and require only 30 minutes or less. Save your sanity and save your time so you can focus on gaining new readers and  building your brand.

1. Decide on a color scheme

Color contributes to branding. Google wouldn't really be Google without its multicolored logo, nor would we recognize McDonald's without its famous golden arches. Pick and stick to a color scheme -- a set of two to three colors used throughout your blog, business cards and social media presence.

I use this pretty light blue color on every post photo to keep my brand recognition strong.

2. Design your own dropdown menu bar

Horizontal menu bars that grace the top of the page offer more intuitive exploration of your blog versus horizontal ones -- people perform actions best when presented left-to-right. Readers also notice this type of menu bar easier than they do horizontal ones, which often look lost among other
sidebar features.

I designed this menu bar to align with my color scheme and I absolutely love it.

Wordpress offers a simple customizable menu bar plugin, however Blogger users grab the short end of the stick; coding for a drop down menu is tricky. I decided to skip the hassle and design my own menubar at CSSMenuMaker.com, which supplies a range of customizable templates -- vertical, dropdown and even flyout -- for only $14 (it's actually a $14 annual membership, but you can go ahead and cancel it afterward if you want).

3. Perfect your "About" page

A good "about" page is like a first date outfit: it should reflect your personality while remaining classy and leaving a little to the imagination. A well-worded and well-designed "about" page will ensure the start of a great relationship with each and every reader. Check out this step-by-step guide from Rachel at In Spaces Between to learn how to handle "the soul of your site."

4. Implement social media buttons

Ranging in shape, size and color, social media buttons or icons mimic your blog theme and catch the reader's eye.

Design your own with any vector program, like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop. Not the artsy type?  Dozens of bloggers offer free downloadable sets of social media icons. Conduct a quick Google search or check out some of my favorites below:

5. Link to related posts

Lead your readers in the right direction by suggesting related reads at the end of each blog post. You can choose to do this manually, as I have at the bottom of my "about" page, or you can opt for a third-party widget, like the one from Link Within that I use at the end of my blog posts -- it chooses post suggestions based on common tags.

 6. Experiment with hover effects

Also called a rollover effect, this simple code results in a change to text or graphics when hovered over with the cursor. This subtle addition adds an instant sense of personality and interactivity to your blog.

Hover effects allow you to add a personal touch to your blog features. Even a simple color change to your social media buttons is enough to make your blog readers go "Ooh! Aah!"
Check out this tutorial from Carrie Loves to learn how to add hover effects to graphics and photos. More advanced coders can test out one of the many other effects, from text changes to photo tilts, outlined in this post from Code it Pretty.

7. Design your own favicon

The favicon -- a combo of "favorite" and "icon" -- displays on the browser tab alongside the name of your website. The tiny image acts as an extension of your brand and adds to your credibility as  a professional blogger. Marianna from Design Your Own Blog wrote a handy dandy tutorial for creating your very own unique favicon, complete with screenshots and common dilemmas such as deciding on a white or transparent background.
